Corr Proposes Select Committee on School Violence
HARRISBURG – In the wake of last month’s school shooting in Florida, and subsequent student walkouts and outcries for change, Rep. Michael Corr (R-Montgomery) is proposing the creation of a House select committee to perform a comprehensive investigation and deliver a detailed report with recommendations about how to prevent similar incidents in the future.

“Protecting the safety and well-being of children who enter public and private schools in Pennsylvania is one of the highest priorities of state government and the state House of Representatives,” Corr said. “Violence in our schools is a complex problem that requires a comprehensive and coordinated approach, and a select committee is the best way to achieve that.”

Typically, various and sometimes competing bills are introduced, considered by different committees and then considered in a piecemeal fashion, failing to address the issue from a comprehensive viewpoint. For example, a gun control bill may have been introduced and referred to the House Judiciary Committee, while a mental health bill may have been introduced and referred to the House Health Committee. The bills – both intended to address the same issue – would likely never be considered in conjunction with one another.

“My approach allows one comprehensive body of legislators to view the issue from a holistic perspective, bringing various viewpoints together in an effort to better protect Pennsylvania teachers and students,” Corr said.

The select committee would be created by a House Resolution. Corr plans to introduce the measure soon and hopes it will be considered by the full House when members return to session in April.
